The Baltics
Pictures from a trip to the little spot between the empires, blocks, and unions.
Renate and me have taken three weeks off work this June of 2003 to
discover or explore parts of the baltic states which are roughly
surrounded by the Sea, Finland, Russia, and Poland.
This is the quick travel summary:
- Zurich - Riga by train and ferry boat
- One week in a Swiss acquaintance's nice little apartment in Riga, the capital of Latvia
- Riga - Saarema by buses and a ferry boat, with two short stop-overs in Latvia
- About four days of travelling on the Estonian island of Saarema by car
- Saarema - Tallinn by bus and ferry boat
- About four days in something they called a "suite" in a hote next to the old town of Tallinn, Estonia's capital
- Tallinn - Zurich by ferry boat and train
The rest of this page is a collection of pictures I have taken on topics and
events that we ran across and had the chance to live during this trip.

Boats
We both like to be on the high seas. We had several chances to have the flat horizon all around us.

Midsummer night
It is said that there is no bigger event in these northern
countries than the midsummer night festival. We had the chance to
experience it twice. The bonfire is up and the dark is very short.

Markets
Riga is said to have the biggest Market in all of Europe, and
it was reportedly the biggest in all of the soviet union. More than in
other countries, markets seem to be an essential part of where people
get their everyday goods.

Factories
I am fascinated by big, old, decomposing building complexes.
The former east block is said to feature some of the most fearsome and
comprehensive such complexes. Though I have probably missed the big
ones, I had the chance to see some big halls.

Girls and heels
Riga is well known for the incredible numbers of women walking
around on very high heels. We both watched in astonishment as these
people ran across cobblestone pavement on these spikes as if they were
walking across a field in sneakers!

Flavor
Many impressions cannot be classified in any way, but they are
there to stay after this trip. I therefore put them under this "flavor"
theme.
